All the work I do is custom made for individuals, and it is usually necessary for me to visit the space in which it will go, before working on a design. Measurements are often crucial, but especially so for built-in pieces. Also, I need to get an understanding of what a customer wants, the function of the piece, what aspects are important to them, what is visually appealing to them, yet will work with existing features in the space. That being the case, my customer base is necessarily limited to Western Oregon, primarily in the Corvallis / Willamette Valley area.
When ordering custom cabinets or furniture, you will be having heirloom-quality pieces made specifically for you, to suit your needs and taste. This often requires some time working together to achieve a design which fulfills that. Typically, I may have work lined up for several weeks, possibly a couple of months if I'm doing a kitchen. During that time, I would work on design with you, exchanging ideas, providing you with sketches, modifying these until we reach the final design. Then I would provide you with scale drawings, draw up a contract, and begin as soon as my schedule allows.
I schedule jobs based on verbal confirmations. When you contact me with an inquiry, I will meet with you, discuss what you have in mind, and get back to you with a ballpark estimate. If you confirm that you want to go ahead with the project, you are then on my schedule. Completion times vary with the piece, but for a typical kitchen cabinet set, expect 10-12 weeks from start to installation. For a single cabinet of simple design, more like 1-2 weeks. Some simple furniture pieces can be done within a week, some take months. If you have clear ideas of what you want, or a photo/sketch of a design, that can greatly reduce overall design time.
I bill for time and materials. I do not mark-up my material costs. I will provide a customer with a projected cost, but it is literally an estimate. Every job is different, every piece of wood works differently from another. I require 35% of the estimated cost in advance for materials and expenses. On jobs requiring more than 2 weeks to complete, I will submit an invoice either weekly or bi-weekly for labor charges.
I can be contacted by phone at home, or if you prefer, by email. I have no internet access at home, so it requires me to go into town to check email, and this I do at least 2 or 3 times weekly. I've no phone in my shop (I get more work done that way, and I stay focused, thereby keeping my fingers intact), so if you call while I'm working, you can leave a message on the machine, and I'll call you back asap. Sometimes I work until late at night, in which case I'll return your call the next day.
